Hebrew Orphan Asylum, Historic institutional orphanage in Mosher, Baltimore, United States.
The Hebrew Orphan Asylum is a four-story red brick building constructed in 1875 with Romanesque Revival design elements. It features a central section with rounded corner towers and three-story wings extending on each side, creating a substantial institutional presence.
The orphanage was founded in 1875 by the Hebrew Benevolent Society following a fire that destroyed a nearby mansion. The building transitioned to hospital use in 1923 and served medical purposes through the late 20th century before becoming a health care center.
This building served as an important refuge for Jewish children in Baltimore during difficult periods of their community's history. The space reflects the care and dedication of those who worked to provide shelter and support to vulnerable young people.
The building is located in the Mosher neighborhood of West Baltimore and remains visible from the street. It currently houses a health care center offering preventive services and maternal health programs for area residents.
This structure holds the distinction of being the oldest purpose-built Jewish orphanage in America. Recognition came through its 2010 listing on the National Register of Historic Places, marking an important but often overlooked chapter in Baltimore's past.
