Westchester Community College is a public college in Valhalla, New York, with a large campus spread across multiple buildings. It offers a library, science labs, a student center, an arts building, and a Gateway Center focused on business and language programs.
The college was founded in 1946 under the name New York State Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences, with early programs in business, trades, and medical office work. In the late 1950s, it moved to the Buena Vista Farm estate in Valhalla, where it has grown steadily ever since.
The college's mascot, Chester the Viking, appears on signs and at events across the campus. Students take part in clubs and elections, giving the campus a social side that goes beyond the classroom.
The campus is close to a train station and several bus stops, so it is easy to reach from many parts of the region. The college also holds classes at other locations across Westchester County, including Peekskill, Ossining, Mount Vernon, and Yonkers.
The campus is home to a Native Plant Center that teaches visitors about local plants and how to care for them. A gallery on the grounds also regularly displays work from local and national artists, giving the campus an unexpected creative side.
