Winter Garden Atrium, Glass atrium in Lower Manhattan, United States
Winter Garden Atrium is a vast glass-enclosed pavilion in Lower Manhattan with a soaring curved glass vault as its ceiling. Inside grow sixteen tall palm trees that fill the vertical space and create a garden-like atmosphere within the urban environment.
The structure suffered significant damage in the attacks of September 2001 and underwent a complete restoration afterward. The rebuilt atrium reopened to the public with updated systems and materials.
The atrium hosts concerts, ballet performances, and exhibitions throughout the year, drawing visitors to experience art in a grand indoor setting. These events create a lively calendar of creative presentations.
The atrium is conveniently located near multiple subway stops and a waterfront marina, making it easy to visit as part of a downtown walk. The climate-controlled interior remains comfortable regardless of outside weather.
The sixteen palms inside grow continuously toward the vaulted ceiling, their slow progression adding a dynamic quality to the static architecture. This living element changes subtly over time as the plants reach upward.
