Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge, National Wildlife Refuge in Arvada, Colorado
Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge is a nature reserve in Arvada that contains ponds, wetlands, and upland grasslands. These different habitats support hundreds of bird species as well as mammals and other wildlife.
The land was protected from development by the Two Ponds Preservation Foundation in 1990 and officially established as a refuge in 1992. This protection preserved an important wildlife habitat within an urban setting.
The refuge functions as a gathering place where schools and nature lovers come to learn about local ecosystems and wildlife. Visitors use the trails to observe birds and spend time outdoors away from the city.
Visitors can walk on trails totaling about three miles, which feature crushed gravel surfaces and viewing areas. The paths are easy to navigate and suited to different fitness levels.
It is one of the smallest units in the entire national refuge system yet hosts over 120 bird species. This concentration of biodiversity in a compact space makes it a noteworthy spot for bird watchers.
