New Center, human settlement in Detroit, Michigan, United States of America
New Center is a neighborhood in Detroit that combines offices, housing, and historic architecture along active streets. The district contains the Fisher Building from 1928 in Art Deco style, Cadillac Place, and rows of shops, theaters, and restaurants serving daily foot traffic and visitors.
New Center developed in the 1920s as Detroit expanded northward, with Cadillac Place built in 1923 as General Motors' headquarters. The Fisher Building followed in 1928, attracting more businesses and workers that transformed the district into a commercial center and symbol of the city's growth.
New Center got its name from its development as a new business district in the 1920s. Today you see historic buildings repurposed for shops, offices, and galleries, with theaters and restaurants where locals gather and visitors explore the neighborhood's mix of old and new.
New Center is located about three miles from downtown and is easily reached by the Q-Line streetcar running along Woodward Avenue. Walking is comfortable through the district, and you will find restaurants, cafes, and shops spread throughout the neighborhood at regular hours.
The Fisher Theater opened in 1928 but became a home for Broadway musicals starting in 1961, making it a major performance venue. The Northern Lights Lounge reopened in 2023 with live jazz on Wednesdays and DJ nights on Fridays, bringing back nightlife energy to the neighborhood.
