Harry S. Truman Historic District, Presidential historic district in Independence, US.
The Harry S. Truman Historic District is a protected historic area in Independence, Missouri, made up of several buildings and sites connected to the life of the 33rd president of the United States. The district covers his family home, neighboring structures, and other locations in the city that were part of his personal and political life.
The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and expanded in 2011 to bring in properties more closely tied to his political career. That expansion reflected a growing interest in tracing how life in Independence shaped and followed his years in office.
The house shows how a middle-class American family lived, without ceremony or display. The furniture and rooms feel personal and everyday, as if the people who lived there had just stepped out.
The visitor center is the best place to start, as it gives an overview of all the sites before you head out to explore them. Most locations are within walking distance of each other, so comfortable shoes and a few hours are all you really need.
After leaving office, Truman simply returned to his house in Independence and went on living there as a regular neighbor, without a formal security detail for many years. He could be seen walking the streets of the district on his own, something that would be unthinkable for a former president today.
