Detonator, Space Shot ride at Worlds of Fun, Kansas City, US.
The Detonator is a vertical launch ride at Worlds of Fun in Kansas City, Missouri, made up of two side-by-side towers with riders seated on the outer edges. A pneumatic system drives the seats upward at high speed before dropping them back down in a sudden motion.
The Detonator opened in 1996 as the first twin-tower ride of its type in North America. That debut helped set a new direction for vertical launch attractions across the continent.
The Detonator's twin towers are visible from much of the park, making it a natural meeting point and reference spot for visitors during the day. Watching riders launch and drop from the ground below has become a small spectacle in itself for those waiting nearby.
Riders must meet a minimum height requirement of about 48 inches (122 cm) to board. Arriving early in the day or on weekdays tends to mean shorter waits at this popular attraction.
The ride runs on roughly 5000 horsepower worth of compressed air, a detail that most visitors never think about while standing in line. All of that stored energy is released in a single brief moment, which is what makes the launch feel so sudden and forceful.
