Liberty Arsenal, Military arsenal site in Liberty, Missouri, US
Liberty Arsenal was a military installation west of Missouri State Highways 291 and 210, situated on a rise overlooking the Missouri River, and it operated from 1838 to 1869. The original buildings no longer stand, and the site is today marked only by historical plaques set into the surrounding landscape.
The site was established in 1838 to store weapons and ammunition for federal troops stationed in the region. On April 20, 1861, around 200 armed men seized control of it and took more than 1,000 rifles, making it one of the first direct confrontations between pro-Confederate and Union forces in Missouri.
Missouri was a border state, and the land around Liberty was home to people with strong loyalties on both sides of the Civil War divide. The markers at the site give visitors a sense of how that division played out in a single local community.
The site is accessible by car and sits just west of Missouri State Highways 291 and 210, making it easy to find from the main roads. Since no original structures remain, the visit is short and works best as a stop during a broader tour of the Liberty area.
When the arsenal was torn down after 1869, local residents salvaged its bricks and used them to build homes across Liberty. Some of those houses are still standing, so parts of the old military site effectively live on inside the walls of ordinary neighborhood buildings.
