Jewell Cemetery State Historic Site, Historic cemetery in Columbia, Missouri.
Jewell Cemetery State Historic Site is a historic burial ground in Columbia, Missouri, enclosed by stone walls with iron gates. The property contains graves of more than 40 Jewell family members.
The property was established in 1841 when George Jewell designated the land for his son William and grandson Thomas. This action created a family burial ground that has remained important to the area's heritage.
William Jewell was a physician and educator whose family generously donated land to support the university in the area. His work shaped the region's approach to learning and public institutions.
The grounds are small and easy to walk through, with paths that guide visitors among the burial sites. Entry is free and the site is open to visitors during daylight hours.
At the back of the cemetery, roughly 20 unmarked limestone blocks mark the burial places of people enslaved by the family. These stones stand as a reminder of a difficult chapter that remains part of the site's story.
