Mercer Lake, West Windsor, New Jersey a man-made lake
Mercer Lake is a man-made reservoir in New Jersey covering about 365 acres with tree-lined shores and calm water. The lake accommodates boating, fishing, and rowing activities, with walking paths along its edges and picnic areas nearby.
The lake was created in 1975 when a dam was built on Assunpink Creek to prevent flooding in nearby Trenton. The project used soil excavated from Interstate 295 construction, combining flood control with water sports infrastructure development.
The lake serves as a gathering place where local communities meet for rowing events and outdoor activities throughout the year. These occasions help maintain it as a valued spot in the region's social fabric.
The area offers convenient parking and well-maintained paths around the water, making it accessible for visitors of all ages. Boats can be launched from docks, and amenities including picnic tables and playgrounds support various recreational activities.
The lake hosted Olympic Team Trials for rowing in 1988, 1992, 2004, and 2008, and serves as a training center for the US Olympic Rowing Team. The racecourse meets international standards set by FISA for elite-level competitions.
