Twin Mounds Site, Archaeological site in Ballard County, Kentucky, United States.

Twin Mounds Site is an archaeological location in Kentucky featuring two large platform mounds arranged around a central plaza with substantial accumulated debris layers. The site's layout reflects typical settlement patterns from the Mississippian period in this river valley region.

The site saw its main period of occupation between 1200 and 1450, aligned with Mississippian cultural phases in the region. Population movement from other settlements brought people here as earlier villages gradually declined.

Archaeological excavations uncovered a rare Cahokia human effigy pipe carved from Missouri flint clay, measuring 17.8 centimeters in height.

The location sits within a landscape marked by several mound sites and river features that shaped settlement patterns. Visitors benefit from understanding the broader archaeological context to appreciate the site's significance.

The site revealed noteworthy craft objects including specialized artworks from distant sources, suggesting networks that connected different communities. Such items point to the inhabitants' participation in far-reaching trade relationships.
