Maywood Historic District, Residential historic district in Arlington County, Virginia, US

Description

Maywood Historic District is a residential neighborhood in Arlington County containing nearly 300 buildings spread across 46 acres of land. Single-family homes line tree-covered streets that follow the original street patterns and layout of the early 20th-century development.

History

The Conservative Realty Company founded this suburb between 1909 and 1913, shortly after the Great Falls and Old Dominion Railroad arrived in the area. The railroad connection spurred residential growth and made large-scale building possible in what had been less developed land.

Culture

The neighborhood displays various architectural styles from Queen Anne to Colonial Revival and Craftsman designs that reflect early 20th-century residential life. Walking through the streets, you notice how these different building styles sit side by side, creating the visual character of the area.

Practical

The neighborhood extends from Lorcom Lane to Lee Highway and from Interstate 66 to North Nelson Street, making it easy to understand the area's boundaries. Walking through is the best way to see the homes and street layout, as the district retains its original pedestrian-friendly design.

Did you know?

Many homes here came from mail-order catalogs and were prefabricated structures ordered from Sears, Roebuck & Company. This catalog-based approach to home building was an affordable and modern solution for suburban development at the time.
