Monroe Courts Historic District

Monroe Courts Historic District encompasses 39 two-story rowhouse buildings arranged in four distinct groups across 2.4 acres of northern Arlington.

The district was constructed in 1938 to accommodate middle-class residents in a growing commuter suburb near Washington, D.C during the pre-World War II period.

The buildings exhibit vernacular Colonial Revival architecture designed by John D. Cobb and Clarence W. Gosnell, reflecting mid-20th century suburban residential patterns.

The district extends between 10th Street North, North Monroe Street, Washington Boulevard, and North Nelson Street, with limited street parking available.

Each building group showcases specific decorative brickwork patterns and rooflines that demonstrate the architectural standards of 1930s residential development.
