Harvard Extension School, Academic department in Cambridge, United States
Harvard Extension School is an academic program in Cambridge, Massachusetts, spread across several locations within the university district and offering advanced degrees. Its classrooms are housed partly in historic brick buildings on campus and partly in newer university structures.
A. Lawrence Lowell, then president of Harvard, founded this program in 1910 to give working adults from Boston and the surrounding areas access to academic education. Over the decades, the program evolved into a nationwide distance learning offering for people from a wide range of professional backgrounds.
The Extension School maintains a global student population representing over 150 countries, creating an educational environment that combines different professional perspectives and cultural backgrounds.
Anyone wishing to enroll must first complete three courses successfully and achieve at least a grade of B. Most classes take place in the evenings, with some also held on weekends or online, allowing study to be combined with work.
The admission system requires applicants to prove their ability before being officially admitted to the program. Students often sit in the same rooms where generations of older learners have taken the same path.
