Harvard Square

Harvard Square is a triangular plaza in Cambridge, surrounded by brick buildings, shops, restaurants, and university facilities. The intersection connects several streets and forms the center of a busy neighborhood.

The intersection began in 1636 as part of a colonial settlement beside the newly founded college. During the 20th century it grew into an important transport node with subway and bus lines.

The name recalls the earliest colonial settlement and now describes a place where students, locals, and visitors share the sidewalks and cafés. Street musicians and small theaters shape the public rhythm around the intersection.

The subway station sits centrally beneath the plaza and offers connections to different parts of Boston and Cambridge. Pedestrian pathways lead directly from the platform to the surrounding streets.

A kiosk from 1928 sold newspapers from many countries for decades and served as a meeting spot. The small building became a landmark for residents and visitors alike.
