Lumen Eclipse, Art gallery in Harvard Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts, US
Lumen Eclipse is an art gallery in Harvard Square, Cambridge, that displays motion art on two large screens mounted outside the Harvard Square MBTA station. The dual displays present rotating artworks from various creators, making contemporary media art accessible at no cost to anyone passing through the area.
The project began in 2005 and has grown into a platform for hundreds of creators. Since its start, it has transformed how people encounter art exhibitions in public spaces like transportation hubs.
Artists such as Yoko Ono, Michel Gondry, and Miranda July have displayed their work through monthly presentations at this public media space. The location serves as a gathering point where people encounter contemporary art in their daily routines without needing to enter a traditional gallery.
The artworks are displayed daily on the outdoor screens and are always free to view. The best way to see the current exhibition is to walk past the station while moving through Harvard Square.
Beyond the main displays, there are regular screening events called Le Peek that occur at local Cambridge venues. These companion events extend the art movement beyond the transit station into different parts of the city.
