Monumento a los heroes de El Polvorín

The granite and marble monument reaches twenty feet in height and features four commemorative plaques detailing the heroic actions of eight individuals.

On January 25, 1899, seven firefighters and one civilian fought a dangerous fire at a U.S. Army artillery camp, preventing explosions and saving the city.

The monument stands as a testament to public service, displaying names of local heroes including Rafael Rivera Esbri, who later became mayor of Ponce.

Visitors can read inscriptions on all four sides of the obelisk, which provide detailed information about the location and circumstances of the fire.

The current structure, completed in 1948, replaced an earlier monument that was destroyed by an earthquake in 1918.
