Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum, Military museum and museum ship in Bay City, United States
The Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum is a museum ship permanently docked on the Saginaw River in Bay City, Michigan. The ship on display is the USS Edson, a Navy destroyer with several accessible decks, including the command bridge, engine rooms, crew quarters, and weapons systems.
The USS Edson entered service in 1958 and remained active until it was decommissioned in 1988. After that, the ship was brought to Bay City and opened to the public as a museum.
For many visitors from the region, the ship feels personal because some of their family members once served on board. Photos and belongings left by former crew members are displayed throughout the vessel, giving the visit a human quality.
Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are a good idea because the ship has narrow staircases and low passages between compartments. People who are uncomfortable in tight spaces should keep that in mind, as many areas below deck are small and dimly lit.
The USS Edson is one of the few surviving Forrest Sherman-class destroyers, making it a rare example of that ship generation. During its active years, it was deployed in the Vietnam War and fired its guns in support of ground troops along the coast.
