Fort Tryon Jewish Center, Conservative synagogue in Hudson Heights, New York City, United States
Fort Tryon Jewish Center is a conservative synagogue located in Hudson Heights housed in a modern building at 524 Fort Washington Avenue. The sanctuary was designed by architect N. J. Sapienza during the 1960s and reflects the architectural style of that era.
The congregation was established in 1938 when Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany joined local residents to create a religious community in Upper Manhattan. This meeting during a difficult time in European history shaped the founding values of the community.
The center welcomes people from many backgrounds to participate in traditional Jewish practices with an egalitarian approach to its services. This openness shapes how the community celebrates together and how daily religious life unfolds within the congregation.
The community currently gathers at the Hebrew Tabernacle on Fort Washington Avenue for regular services, educational programs, and community events. Visitors should check ahead to find out when activities take place in order to plan their visit accordingly.
The original sanctuary featured nature-inspired stained glass windows created by artist Juliene Berk that have been preserved in storage since 2021. These special artworks showcase the creative vision that once defined the interior of the original structure.
