Hotel Metropole, hotel in Cincinnati, Ohio
Hotel Metropole is a building in downtown Cincinnati built in 1913 in the Neoclassical style with wide halls, high ceilings, columns, and symmetrical windows. The structure has solid brick walls and preserves many original details that reflect its timeless character.
Designed by the architecture firm Joseph Steinkamp & Brother, the hotel opened on December 31, 1912 with about 800 guests attending the celebration. After decades as a popular luxury destination, it was converted to apartments in the 1970s and later reopened in 2012 as a modern museum hotel after extensive restoration.
The name Metropole reflects its role as an upscale destination in downtown Cincinnati's heart. Visitors can see how the classical architecture with columns and symmetrical windows shapes the space today and connects to the city's identity.
The hotel sits on Walnut Street in downtown Cincinnati near Fountain Square, surrounded by shops, restaurants, and theaters. Visitors can walk through galleries displaying contemporary art throughout the building and easily access nearby city attractions.
A large brass chandelier sculpture hangs outside the building, giving the entrance an unexpected artistic touch. When visitors press a button, the fixture produces breathing sounds and its lights shift based on the time of day or night.
