DeVault-Massengill House
DeVault-Massengill House, Greek Revival house in Piney Flats, Tennessee, United States
The DeVault-Massengill House is a Greek Revival residence in Piney Flats, Tennessee, consisting of a brick structure built in 1842 and an adjacent log cabin situated on approximately 159 acres of farmland. The property includes multiple agricultural buildings such as barns and a silo that supported the farming operations.
A log cabin was first erected on this site in 1769 by Henry Massengill, marking the property's earliest settlement. The main brick structure followed between 1840 and 1842 when Isaac DeVault took ownership and built a substantial Greek Revival home.
The property reflects local craftsmanship traditions, as walnut and cherry wood from the land were incorporated into built-in bookcases and fireplace surrounds. This practice shows how residents directly connected their living spaces to the natural resources around them.
The property sits along Bristol Highway, accessible as a historic estate with residential and agricultural buildings. Visitors should expect to see a private estate with expansive grounds and proximity to main road access for convenient arrival.
The estate preserves two distinct building phases standing side by side, with the older log cabin positioned next to the larger brick mansion. This arrangement allows visitors to observe how construction methods and design preferences changed across more than 70 years.
