Wabasha Street Caves, Underground cave system in Saint Paul, United States
Wabasha Street Caves is an underground cavity system carved into sandstone beneath Saint Paul, Minnesota, with multiple chambers connected by passages. The caves extend beneath street level and can be explored through guided visits that show the layout and structure of these excavated spaces.
The site began in the 1840s as a sandstone quarry where workers extracted stone for construction. Decades later, during the 1920s, the abandoned quarry became a hidden gathering place for underground activities.
The caves reflect Saint Paul's connection to a specific chapter of its past, and visitors come to understand how underground spaces once served the community in unexpected ways. The site shows how ordinary places became part of local stories and memories.
Visits are by guided tour only and require advance booking before arriving. Check availability ahead of time to plan your visit appropriately.
The walls still bear bullet holes from the 1930s, leaving traces of past conflicts embedded in the stone. This is the only restored site of its kind remaining in the area.
