Elm Lawn Cemetery, cemetery in Bay City, Michigan
Elm Lawn Cemetery is a burial ground in Bay City, Michigan that opened in 1891 and spans about 60 acres with beech, cedar, maple, oak, and pine trees. The entrance features a Romanesque Revival stone arch built in 1892, along with an adjacent gatehouse and small sandstone chapel.
The cemetery was founded in 1890 after local businessmen determined that older burial grounds nearby were full. Mason L. Brown from Detroit designed the grounds with curved roads and shaded areas, and the first burial took place in October 1891.
The cemetery reflects Bay City's history, with graves of business owners, soldiers, and families who lived in the community for generations. The names on the markers and varied monuments show how people chose to honor their loved ones over time.
The cemetery is accessible during daylight hours and features winding paths among the trees and graves. The main entrance with its stone arch provides a clear starting point for exploring the grounds.
The distinctive Romanesque Revival arch at the entrance is among the oldest surviving structures on the grounds but has suffered weathering damage in recent years. Visitors can observe how stonework from around 1892 has withstood time while also revealing the challenges facing historic structures.
