Khama Rhino Sanctuary, Game reserve in Central District, Botswana.
Khama Rhino Sanctuary is a protected area spanning about 43 square kilometers in central Botswana with open grasslands and varied terrain. Black rhinos, white rhinos, giraffes, wildebeest, antelopes, and ostriches move freely across the landscape.
The sanctuary was established in 1992 after rhino populations in Botswana had declined sharply during the 1980s. It was created as a direct response to save these animals from disappearing in the region.
The reserve is managed by people from the nearby village of Serowe, who lead visitors through guided tours and operate an education center where local children learn about protecting wildlife.
You can stay overnight in chalets at Mokongwa Camp that have hot water or choose the Khama Rhino Lodge with its eight guest units. There are also thirteen designated camping areas available for different preferences and comfort levels.
An electric fence with watchtowers surrounds the entire area where approximately forty rhinos are protected by guards working both day and night. This intensive security setup reflects how carefully these vulnerable animals must be watched to ensure their survival.
