Albstadt, Mountain city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
Albstadt is a town on the Swabian Alb in Baden-Württemberg positioned at 731 meters elevation between Stuttgart and Lake Constance. Its houses and neighborhoods are spread across several hills and valleys of the limestone plateau.
The town was formed in 1975 when several smaller communities on the plateau merged together. Three significant earthquakes in 1911, 1943, and 1978 damaged buildings and required the reconstruction of entire streets.
Textile manufacturing shapes the townscape through old factory buildings and preserved industrial structures. Nine museums throughout the town display exhibits about weaving, spinning machines, and the development of regional crafts.
The neighborhoods are scattered across different elevations, so a car or local bus service is helpful for traveling longer distances. The Albstadt-Sigmaringen University is located in the Ebingen district and brings activity to the area, especially on weekdays.
Groz-Beckert, a company based here, produces a large portion of the world's industrial sewing needles and employs over a thousand workers. The factory supplies customers on every continent with specialized needles for textile manufacturing.
