Westerwald-Kaserne, Military barracks in Montabaur, Germany
Westerwald-Kaserne was a large military facility at the southern edge of Montabaur with multiple buildings and training areas. The entire site contained different functional zones designed for military operations and personnel.
The barracks were built between 1964 and 1966 and initially served as headquarters for a rocket artillery unit with nuclear weapons. After the Cold War, this military unit was dissolved in 1993.
A shared community center called Haus Mons Tabor once brought soldiers and local residents together for social interactions. This meeting place shaped how the military facility and the town related to each other.
After closing in 2004, the site was redeveloped into a residential neighborhood with apartment buildings, lofts, and single-family homes. You can visit the area freely today as it functions as a regular residential district.
The site was transformed into a large residential complex called Quarter South, representing one of the biggest conversion projects from military base to housing in the region. This shift shows how former military property found new purpose in urban development.
