Burg Hornberg

Burg Hornberg is a medieval fortress perched high above the Neckar valley, built with thick stone walls, multiple towers, and a fortified inner courtyard. The complex displays typical defensive features of a medieval castle, with narrow passages between buildings and steep approaches to the main structures.

The fortress is first recorded in 1266 and served as a protective stronghold against regional conflicts. In the 16th century, a renowned knight took over the site and left a lasting mark on its story.

The castle shows how nobles lived here and what role it played as a regional power center. The rooms and furnishings tell the story of daily life in that era and the fortress's importance to the surrounding area.

The castle is reached via steep pathways and requires good footwear and some stamina to explore the full site. Guided tours are available through the buildings, offering insights into the various rooms and how they were used.

A knight named Götz von Berlichingen purchased the castle in 1517 and lived there for over 40 years. His presence turned the site into a legendary location in German knight history and later attracted writers and artists to study and depict it.
