Alter Friedhof Segeroth, Historical cemetery in Nordviertel, Essen, Germany.
Alter Friedhof Segeroth is a burial ground with multiple sections, pathways through landscaped areas, and gravestones spanning different historical periods. The grounds show how the space was expanded over time and now contains distinct zones.
The burial ground was established in 1863 to serve the southern area and grew through expansions in 1883 and 1892. After more than a century of use, new burials ceased here in 1983.
The cemetery holds graves and memorials of people who shaped life in this area, including soldiers from past conflicts and miners from the region. These burial sites tell the stories of those who worked and lived here.
The grounds are accessible via Segerothstraße, with public transportation nearby at Berliner Platz. Visitors can walk through the entire area comfortably, and the open layout makes it easy to navigate.
Between 2005 and 2007, a pond was created in the eastern area and restored to become an ecological space. This water feature now hosts plants and wildlife, giving the grounds a different feel from traditional cemetery landscapes.
