Ehekarussell, Bronze fountain at White Tower, Nuremberg, Germany
The Marriage Carousel is a bronze fountain in central Nuremberg near the White Tower. The sculptures show people and animals in six scenes representing different phases of a marriage.
Sculptor Jürgen Weber designed the installation between 1977 and 1981. The city installed it in 1984 to conceal a metro ventilation shaft.
The sculptures take their theme from a 16th-century poem by Hans Sachs about the bitter and sweet sides of married life. Visitors today see representations of love, conflict and reconciliation distributed around the fountain rim.
The fountain stands in the pedestrian zone near White Tower station and helps with orientation in the center. The area works well for a walk through the inner city.
The Leichtweiss Institute designed a water filtration system that combines the function of metro ventilation with the public artwork. The technical setup remains invisible to most visitors, though it is important for the fountain's operation.
