Sulayman Pasha Mosque, Ottoman mosque in Cairo Citadel, Egypt
Sulayman Pasha Mosque is a house of worship within the Citadel complex featuring a large dome positioned above the main prayer hall. A square minaret with wooden balconies and detailed stucco decorations rises from the structure.
The structure was built in 1528 under the administration of Suleyman Pasha and replaced an earlier building from 1140. This foundation marked the first application of the architectural approach that the Ottoman Empire brought to Egypt.
The interior showcases calligraphic inscriptions in different Arabic scripts alongside colorful marble decorations that adorn the prayer hall. These visual elements create a contemplative setting that appeals to both visitors and worshippers.
The site sits near the northern wall of the Citadel and remains active with separate areas for regular worshippers and guests. When entering, keep in mind the dress code and respect the guidelines of the space.
The building was among the first to bring the Ottoman style directly from Istanbul into an Egyptian setting. This fusion created a place that reflects the shift in regional power and artistic influence during this period.
