Al-Nasir Muhammad Mosque, Mamluk mosque at the Citadel, Cairo, Egypt
Al-Nasir Muhammad Mosque is a rectangular structure at the Citadel featuring two solid stone minarets topped with bulbous domes covered in colorful glazed mosaics. The building encloses a central courtyard surrounded by covered galleries and columned halls that provide shade and gathering space.
Sultan Al-Nasir Muhammad built this structure in 1318 during his third reign as a place for major prayer gatherings. It soon became the most important location for royal ceremonies and worship in the city.
The building displays a blend of architectural elements that craftsmen drew from different traditions of the time. You can observe this in the columns and decorative details, which reveal how artisans combined various styles in their work.
The structure has multiple entrances and is designed so visitors can easily find their way inside. The different areas are connected by covered passages, which helps when visiting in the heat.
The budget for construction generated extra funds, making it one of the wealthiest religious institutions of its era. This financial strength later allowed for more elaborate work and better upkeep.
