The Sabil-kuttab of Qaytbay contains two distinct sections: a ground floor water distribution facility and an upper floor Quranic school for children.
Sultan al-Ashraf Qaytbay commissioned this structure between 1472 and 1474 as part of his extensive architectural contributions throughout the Mamluk period.
The building exemplifies the Mamluk tradition of combining public water access with religious education, reflecting Islamic principles of charity and knowledge.
The structure maintains its original dual purpose, with separate entrances leading to the water distribution area and the educational space above.
The building features intricate stone carvings, geometric patterns, and Arabic calligraphy that demonstrate the sophisticated craftsmanship of Mamluk architecture.
