Tomb of Hetpet

Tomb of Hetpet, Ancient Egyptian tomb in Saqqara, Egypt.

The Tomb of Hetpet is a rectangular limestone structure with sloping walls located within the Saqqara necropolis. The walls contain detailed reliefs depicting daily life scenes in ancient Egypt and contain multiple chambers for storing burial goods.

The tomb dates to around 2500 BCE during the Fifth Dynasty and belonged to Hetpet, a high-ranking official who served as a Priestess of Hathor. Its construction and decoration reveal the technical advances and religious practices of that period.

The offering chapel with its false door shows how family members brought food and goods for the deceased's journey to the afterlife. This space reveals personal remembrance practices that were part of everyday temple life.

The tomb is located within the Saqqara necropolis, about 30 kilometers south of Cairo. Visitors should expect uneven ground and bring sun protection, as the site has minimal shade.

Some wall reliefs from the chapel are now housed in museums outside Egypt, including the Liebieghaus in Frankfurt and the Egyptian Museum in Berlin. This separation means visitors must travel to multiple locations to see the complete decoration of this burial chamber.
