Ermita de Santa María de Iguacel

The Ermita de Santa María de Iguácel is a Romanesque hermitage near Jaca with a rectangular nave and a distinctive semicircular apse. A quadrangular tower rises on the northern side, while the interior originally featured wooden ceiling covering.

Construction began around 1040 under Geldaniz, while his son completed the building work in a later period. The design followed stylistic features visible in the nearby cathedral.

The semicircular apse shows structural features that reflect early Romanesque craftsmanship of the region. The way the stonework was executed became a model that other churches in the area would later follow.

The church sits in a remote location best reached via the Canfranc road, turning at Castiello de Jaca and following the valley path. Local guidance or landmarks are helpful since the access route is not clearly marked.

The interior walls bear medieval murals depicting religious scenes and offering glimpses into the artistic traditions of that time. These paintings with their layered registers show the skill that medieval painters brought to their work.
