Liverpool Overhead Railway Southern Extension Tunnel, Grade II listed railway tunnel in Liverpool, England.
The Liverpool Overhead Railway Southern Extension Tunnel is an underground rail passage that runs beneath residential neighborhoods of the city. The structure extends from Herculaneum Dock to Dingle station and features typical Victorian-era tunnel construction characteristics.
The tunnel was built in 1896 by engineers Charles Douglas Fox and J.H. Greathead as part of the elevated rail system. The system ceased operations in 1956.
The tunnel shows Victorian engineering craft with distinctive details visible on its facades and throughout its structure. It reflects the technical skill of the era that remains apparent in how it was built.
Access to the tunnel is not publicly available today as the system has not operated for decades. Visitors can observe the structure from outside and its visible features from street level.
A serious fire broke out in the tunnel in 1901 that caused several deaths. This led to the closure of Dingle station for approximately two years.
