Hawkins House, Office building in Dublin, Ireland.
Hawkins House is a 12-story office building made of concrete and glass, situated at the corner of Poolbeg Street and Hawkins Street in central Dublin. The structure stands about 41 meters tall and occupies a prominent position in this busy part of the city center.
The building was constructed between 1962 and 1964 by English architect Sir Thomas Bennett on the former site of the Theatre Royal. Its completion marked the expansion of Dublin's modern administrative infrastructure during the post-war period.
The Department of Health headquarters represented the modernist architectural movement of the 1960s with its distinct curtain walls and concrete slab facades.
The building remained in use until 2020, after which demolition and redevelopment plans were set in motion. Visitors should note that the site is currently undergoing transformation and may not be freely accessible.
In a 1998 public survey, Dublin residents voted this government building as the least attractive structure in the city. This lack of public favor later reflected the willingness to demolish and redesign the site.
