Ranjangaon Ganpati, Hindu temple in Ranjangaon, India
Ranjangaon Ganpati is a stone structure in Ranjangaon, about 50 kilometers from Pune, with a central Ganesha figure inside. Two smaller statues named Riddhi and Siddhi stand on either side of the main figure in the sanctum.
Sardar Kibe built the assembly hall of the temple in the 18th century. The inner sanctum arose later during the rule of Madhavrao Peshwa.
Pilgrims walk around the shrine and often prostrate on the ground to show devotion. Wrestlers compete on the temple grounds during major festival days in traditional bouts.
The shrine opens daily early in the morning and remains accessible until late evening. You can reach it via the road from Pune to Nagar, about an hour's drive from Pune.
The building's orientation lets sunlight fall directly on the deity during certain weeks of the year. This interplay of architecture and solstice shows the astronomical knowledge of the builders.
