Alios Iwaki Performing Arts Center, Music venue in Iwaki, Japan.
The Alios Iwaki Performing Arts Center is a performing arts venue in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, with several halls built for concerts, theater, and other live performances. It also has rehearsal rooms, gallery spaces, and areas for community use, making it a multi-purpose cultural building.
The center opened in 2008 and was one of the largest cultural projects the Fukushima Prefecture had taken on at the time. It was built to give the region a lasting home for performing arts and creative activities.
The name "Alios" comes from a Latin word meaning "in another way", which reflects the center's aim to offer art that feels fresh and open. Visitors today find a program that brings together local performers and international guests on the same stages.
The building is close to Iwaki Station, so it is easy to reach by train. Inside, the different halls are clearly signposted, making it straightforward to find your way around even on a first visit.
The building received the BCS Prize, one of Japan's most recognized awards given by the construction industry for architectural quality. This award goes to the building itself rather than to its architects, which makes it unusual among design honors.
