Santi Materno e Lucia, Lecco

Santi Materno e Lucia is a neoclassical church in Pescarenico featuring a single nave with cross arches and a gabled ceiling. The front facade is characterized by Ionic pilasters with capitals and a triangular pediment.

Cardinal Carlo Borromeo commissioned this church in 1576 alongside a Capuchin monastery that thrived for over two centuries. Napoleon's government expelled the monks in 1810, ending the monastery's long religious mission.

The ceiling paintings depict musical angels and holy figures, while a large canvas shows the Holy Trinity with saints. These works reflect the religious artistic practice of their era.

The church stands on Piazza Padre Cristoforo in the Pescarenico neighborhood and is easily accessible on foot. The former monastery buildings surrounding the church now serve as residential apartments, which shapes the local setting.

One chapel houses a late Baroque wooden statue of the Sorrowful Virgin paired with nine polychrome wax panels depicting Franciscan miracles. This rare combination of carved wood and wax offers insight into an unusual form of religious devotional art.
