San Nicolò Bell Tower, Gothic Revival bell tower in Lecco, Italy
San Nicolò Bell Tower rises with an octagonal base and triangular spire in a Neo-Gothic style. Its walls are built from Moltrasio stone and granite, giving it a distinctive appearance above Lecco.
Construction began in 1882 on the site of a 15th-century defensive structure. Work stretched until 1904 when the bells were finally installed.
The bells ring throughout the day, becoming part of the local soundscape and marking important community moments. Residents have developed a deep connection to this structure through generations of daily sounds.
Reaching the observation deck requires climbing around 400 steps, which demands physical effort. Children under six are not allowed to ascend, and comfortable shoes are recommended for the visit.
Locals affectionately call it 'Matitone,' meaning pencil in Italian, because of its elongated shape. This nickname shows how deeply the structure is woven into the community's everyday speech.
