Senbonmatsubara, 岐阜県海津市にある松が植えられた堤防
Senbonmatsubara is a long row of pine trees stretching along a historic levee, with over a thousand trees, some more than 200 years old. The trees form a dense green wall creating a shaded, orderly line that extends across the landscape with carefully maintained pathways running through it.
The levee and pine grove were established by warriors from Satsuma to control flooding and protect their community from water damage. This effort took place centuries ago and left behind a natural legacy that has endured to the present day.
The name Senbonmatsubara means 'thousand pines' and reflects the large number of trees lining the levee. Local communities view this place as a symbol of collective effort and dedication, where nature and human work come together to protect their land.
The site is easily reached by car or public transport, with ample parking available near the entrance for visitor convenience. Pathways are well-maintained and accessible for most visitors, making it suitable for a leisurely walk or family outing.
Each of the older trees at this site carries its own name, a tradition that emphasizes the connection between the present and the past. This naming practice turns each tree into an individual story and links visitors directly to local history.
