Spiaggia di Cinisi, Public beach in Cinisi, Italy
The Spiaggia di Cinisi is a public sandy beach on the northwestern coast of Sicily, within the municipality of Cinisi near Palermo. The shoreline is flat and open, bordered on one side by a small fishing port that defines the character of the area.
For generations, this stretch of shore served mainly as a working space for fishermen who set out from Cinisi into the Tyrrhenian Sea. During the 20th century it gradually became a bathing beach for people from the surrounding area as well.
Local fishermen still use part of the shore to land their boats and lay out nets in the open, which gives the beach a working character. This daily routine plays out in plain sight and sets this stretch of coast apart from purely tourist beaches.
The beach is easy to reach on foot from the center of Cinisi and works best in the morning or late afternoon when the sun is less intense. Some areas offer umbrellas and sun loungers for hire, while a portion of the shore remains free of charge.
The beach sits very close to Palermo airport, which means planes pass low overhead while people swim and sunbathe below. Some visitors come specifically to watch the aircraft, making this a spot where the sea and air traffic share the same sky.
