Daiōsaki Lighthouse, Historic lighthouse in Shima, Japan
The white concrete lighthouse stands 22.5 meters tall on coastal cliffs, guiding ships through dangerous waters between Kumano Nada and Enshu Nada seas.
The lighthouse construction began in 1927 after multiple shipwrecks in the area, including a devastating incident involving mackerel fishing boats in 1913.
The lighthouse attracts numerous artists who capture its stark white structure against the Pacific Ocean, making the area a significant destination for painters.
The lighthouse opens daily from 9:00 to 16:30 between March and October, with admission fees of 300 yen for visitors aged 13 and above.
The observation deck provides clear evidence of Earth's curvature as visitors watch approaching ships gradually appear from the horizon, starting with their mast tips.
