Hita Castle, Japanese castle in Hita, Japan

The castle stands in a mountain basin where merchants and craftsmen established their trade centers during the Edo period in Oita Prefecture.

Maruyama Castle, constructed in 1601 by Mitsuuji Ogawa, transformed the surrounding area into a regional administrative center for the shogunate.

The castle grounds connect to Mameda district, where traditional houses display local crafts including wooden clogs, wicker baskets, and bamboo products.

Visitors can reach the castle site by taking a 20-minute walk from JR Hita station, following the gas lamp-lit streets through the Mameda district.

The castle area features the Kangien academy site, where scholar Tanso Hirose educated 5,000 students from across Japan until 1897.
