Tamashima, Historical port town in Kurashiki, Japan

The former merchant district of Tamashima features preserved wooden warehouses, traditional sake breweries, and a network of canals along the waterfront.

During the Edo period, Tamashima flourished as a trading port for the Matsuyama Domain, where thousand-koku ships transported goods throughout the region.

The Entsuji Temple gained recognition when monk Ryokan practiced meditation there in 1781, establishing it as a center for Buddhist traditions.

The Tamashima Harbor Island, spanning 245 hectares, functions as an international logistics hub with modern shipping facilities and industrial complexes.

The Sabimi Beach in Tamashima's Kurosaki district opened in 1882 as Japan's first official swimming beach for public use.
