Mount Kanuki, Mountain summit in Numazu, Japan.
Mount Kanuki is a forested summit in Numazu, Shizuoka Prefecture, rising to about 193 meters and reached by several marked trails. The paths wind through woodland and pass a number of rest stops and viewpoints along the way to the top.
Long before modern times, this summit was used as a landmark by travelers and merchants moving along the regional sea routes. Over the centuries, religious structures were added to its slopes, some of which can still be seen today.
A five-story pagoda stands on the hillside and draws visitors who pause to take it in alongside the surrounding forest. Smaller shrines line parts of the trail, giving a sense of how this place has long been woven into local religious life.
Most trails start close to Numazu Station and follow well-kept paths to the top, with the climb typically taking around one hour. Good footwear and water are worth bringing, as some sections can be steeper than the overall height suggests.
On a clear day, the top offers a view of Mount Fuji, Suruga Bay, and the Southern Alps all at once, which is rare for a summit this low. This happens because of where the mountain sits, right at the edge of the Izu Peninsula coast.
