Akashi Port Old Lighthouse, Historical lighthouse in Akashi, Japan.
Akashi Port Old Lighthouse is a white stone structure with a square pyramidal base situated at the west breakwater of Akashi harbor. The building stands about 7 meters tall and displays the classic design typical of Japanese maritime installations from its era.
The lighthouse was built in 1657 and received modern lighting equipment in 1873 to improve maritime safety. Operations ceased in 1963 after the structure had guided harbor traffic for more than 3 centuries.
The structure reflects traditional Japanese maritime building methods from the Edo period and gained cultural property status from Akashi City in 2021. Visitors can observe how the design connected to everyday harbor operations and local seafaring life.
The lighthouse stands at Port Town 2-8 in Akashi and visitors can view its exterior from the surrounding area. The location offers good access and allows you to walk around the structure and see it from different angles.
The Coast Guard transferred ownership to Akashi City in 1999, ensuring the lighthouse would be preserved rather than demolished or left to deteriorate. This decision transformed it from a functional maritime tool into a public historical landmark that residents and visitors can explore today.
