Sumi Furusawa Site, Archaeological site in Shisui, Japan.
The Sumi Furusawa Site occupies a circular area measuring 70 meters north-south and 60 meters east-west on the grounds of Shisui, Chiba Prefecture.
The settlement dates back to 34,000 BCE during the Upper Paleolithic period when Japan maintained land connections to mainland Asia through natural bridges.
Excavations revealed 4,386 stone tools, including trapezoid implements and knife-shaped objects, indicating advanced crafting techniques of early Japanese inhabitants.
The site remains partially buried to preserve archaeological integrity, while selected stone tools are displayed at the Shisui Community Plaza for public viewing.
The stone tools discovered at the location contain materials from distant regions, including glassy black andesite from Gunma Prefecture and obsidian from Nagano Prefecture.
