Sumi Furusawa Site

The Sumi Furusawa Site is an archaeological location in Shisui where tens of thousands of stone tools have been uncovered from the ground. The area shows clear evidence of early human settlement and activity over a large expanse.

This location dates back roughly 34,000 years ago when Japan was still connected to mainland Asia through land bridges. This early period of human settlement shows that people already possessed considerable skills for survival and tool-making.

The site reveals how its early inhabitants crafted specialized tools adapted for their daily tasks and survival needs. The types of objects found show the skill and knowledge these people possessed in working with stone.

Parts of the site are open for visitors to walk through and see the excavation area. Some of the discovered tools are displayed nearby at the Shisui Community Plaza where you can view them.

The tools were made from materials sourced from distant regions, showing that early inhabitants obtained raw materials from far away. These trade routes or movement patterns reveal how connected these ancient people already were.
