Momonga Standing and Loop Coaster, Steel roller coaster in Yomiuriland, Japan
Momonga Standing and Loop Coaster was a steel roller coaster at Yomiuriland that offered two train types: a stand-up version and a sit-down version. Both traveled through a vertical loop and climbed via a chain lift hill.
The roller coaster opened in 1979 and operated successfully until September 2021. The stand-up train version was added in 1982 as one of the world's earliest standing coasters.
The name Momonga comes from the Japanese flying squirrel, reflecting how local wildlife inspires attraction names in amusement parks.
The track stretched about 420 meters and reached about 25 meters in height, with separate queues for both train versions. Each train carried about 20 passengers.
The station platform moved sideways to connect the trains with the track, creating a distinctive mechanical process at the start of each ride. This innovative loading method became known among enthusiasts for the anticipation it built before departure.
