Pontelungo

The Pontelungo is a road bridge spanning the Reno River and linking different parts of Bologna. Its structure features nineteenth-century design with solid stone piers and graceful arches that define the crossing.

Built between 1878 and 1880 under Adriano Panighi's direction, it replaced an earlier medieval bridge that suffered repeated damage from river floods. This represented a shift toward more reliable infrastructure for the city.

Four marble sirens carved by sculptor Carlo Monari ornament the bridge's corner parapets, reflecting the city's artistic traditions. These figures shape how locals and visitors experience the crossing and connect to Bologna's decorative heritage.

The bridge has undergone restoration work since 2021, which may affect access at certain times. Check current conditions before visiting to plan your crossing or use alternative routes if needed.

The structure survived severe flooding in 1893 and bombing attacks during World War II. Its resilience reflects the robust quality of the original construction and engineering.
