Pontelungo, Road bridge in Bologna, Italy
The Pontelungo spans across the Reno River, connecting different sections of Bologna through its traditional nineteenth-century engineering design and structure.
Built between 1878 and 1880 under Adriano Panighi's direction, this bridge replaced a twelfth-century structure repeatedly damaged by river floods.
The marble sirens created by sculptor Carlo Monari stand at the four corners of the bridge's parapets, representing local artistic heritage.
The bridge undergoes a three-year restoration project since 2021, including structural improvements and preparation for the new tram line number 1.
The structure survived both the severe floods of 1893 and World War II attacks, demonstrating its endurance through natural and human-made challenges.
